It takes a special kind of person to work at Customs Clearance Ltd. We’re an informal but hard-working and flexible team, with a set of habits and attitudes (or you could call them ‘customs’) that we believe mark us out from the rest. Here are a few pointers as to how we do business; with each other, with our suppliers and of course, with our customers:

We leave our egos at home. We know we’re good, and we’re proud of what we achieve. But we don’t have to keep pressing it home. It’s a team thing here.

We keep it positive. It’s all too easy to be negative – to complain, grumble, back-bite and look for problems. Instead, we focus on the positive, we see the good and we search for solutions. There’s no room for ‘Dementors’ here.

We give our best and work our hardest. When we’re at work, it has our best attitudes, our highest energy and our fullest commitment. Every project, every customer, every task.

We aim for success – professional, commercial and personal. That means surrounding ourselves with the right people and nurturing good relationships – at work and in our personal lives. It means planting the right seeds. It means keeping our eyes on the ball. Whatever the metaphor, we know it takes time and commitment.

We value others. Our colleagues, suppliers, customers, friends and associates. Each and every one is important and has a right to be heard. We give in order to receive and we look for ways to help before expecting others to help us.

Collaboration collaboration collaboration. We pick the right team, we communicate clearly our goals, objectives and timescales. We support, develop and mentor, and expect to be supported, developed and mentored in return. We’re open to joint ventures, partnerships and other mutually rewarding commercial propositions.

Mistakes and failures are learnings. They are not setbacks, nor are they excuses to quit or retreat into our cave. They are opportunities to come back stronger, wiser and better equipped.

Opportunity is everywhere. Whether it’s a business deal to close, a chance to show what we can do, or an occasion to connect, or share something we know. We look for the opportunities, and do you know what? We find them everywhere.

Clarity of thought, words and actions. Think and plan; plan and execute. Listen well, concentrate and analyse; Communicate clearly and focus on the task at hand. Be ‘present’, whatever the situation.

More haste – less speed. There’s no need to panic and throw stuff around. If something needs to be done in a hurry, we act urgently, recruit support where we can, but above well we focus and stay calm and professional. Nobody gets anywhere by running around like a headless chicken.

Have fun! Yes, we all have to earn a living. But there’s nothing that says it shouldn’t be fun too. It’s the old “work hard, play hard” mentality brought up-to-date with professional informality, flexibility, give-and-take, a healthy dose of sociability and a sense of humour.
